Our time in the ME has come to an end, and it has been so special. Though many of the stories and specifics must be saved for our face-to-face coffee dates, there’s one more that I want to share with you!

Most of my days consisted of sitting in homes or a wood shop for work, so I began going on walks in the late afternoons. One day, I happened to walk through the streets soon after school had let out for the day. Immediately, I had a bunch of little best friends. They jumped and skipped and danced around as they began to realize I was there to know and love them. We danced in the streets and they tried on my headphones, so I queued Amazing Grace in Arabic (dance pictured!). Soon, I pulled out my Google Translate and started a conversation with the two older girls, who were probably around 9 and 11 years old and are growing up in Muslim families. They asked me questions like “Where are you from?” and “What are you doing here?” in Arabic. After a few minutes, they learned that I’m a follower of Jesus and we continued our conversation.

As the late afternoon call to prayer sounded around the city, I got to share with them that I also pray. But I get to pray to God whenever and wherever I want to! When I’m in my home, when I’m walking in the streets, when I’m with my friends, when I’m sad, happy, scared, or grateful I can pray to God. They were captivated by the idea and the freedom. As we were talking over translate, I was praying that the Lord would continue to lead my words as I shared simple but crucial truths about the heart of God through the gospel of Jesus.

My little friends were sitting on the curb with me, one on either side. They passed my phone to me, and I was ready to answer their next question. “Talk to God with us” the translator said. It surprised me! But I gratefully took the opportunity to pray. I folded my hands and bowed my head, showing them that we still honor and respect God in our prayers, and I realized they were copying my every move. As I began to pray, with my phone sitting on my knee, the girls pressed the translate button. They wanted to hear how I talked to God. It was precious. I prayed and thanked God for salvation, provision, life, and his love. In my heart, I prayed that the girls’ hearts would be moved and impacted by encountering conversation with the Living God. My own heart was moved and impacted remembering the simple truth of the Gospel and the good news that I can talk to God anytime and anywhere.
